Thinking About Counseling? Start Here: A Guide to Beginning Your Journey

The decision to begin counseling is often marked by a mix of hope and hesitation. It is a brave first step, yet it can feel daunting to navigate the unknown of a therapeutic environment. At Wellspring Counseling, we want you to know that you don’t have to carry your burdens alone. Whether you are facing a specific crisis or simply feel “stuck,” this guide is designed to provide clarity and comfort as you consider your next steps.
This guide is adapted from a solo episode of The Counseling Podcast, featuring Jonathan Kittel. Our vision is to be a source for emotional and relational health, helping you move toward the flourishing life you envision.
How Do I Know if I Actually Need Counseling?
Determining if therapy is the right move usually involves looking through two primary clinical lenses: Distress and Interference.
Assessing Your Distress: The Internal Pain Scale
When you visit a physician, they often ask you to rank your physical pain on a scale of 0 to 10. We invite you to apply that same metric to your internal world. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, or the strain of a fractured relationship, ask yourself: How much does this hurt? High levels of emotional or relational distress are a clear signal that it is time to seek professional support.
Evaluating Interference: Moving Toward Flourishing
Sometimes, pain isn’t the only indicator. Jonathan Kittel often shares an analogy regarding a past back injury: after initial treatment, the sharp pain subsided, but he still couldn’t bend, twist, or reach as he normally would. His physical therapist asked a pivotal question: ”What percent of normal is your life now?”
In counseling, we look for this same “interference.” Even if your daily pain is manageable, are you able to flourish? Are you reaching your potential? If you find yourself unable to get where you want to go on your own—if you are “stuck” in patterns that keep you from the life you wish you had—counseling provides the partnership necessary to regain your full range of motion in life and relationships.
Demystifying the Intake: What Really Happens in Session One
The first session is a collaborative conversation. While your counselor will certainly ask about your pain, the primary focus is getting to know you as a person. We want to understand your values, your history, and your vision for the future.
A core part of this discovery is the “Miracle Question.” We invite you to consider:
“If counseling truly helped, how would you know? What in your life would be different if you were feeling more like you wanted to feel, or relating to people more like you wanted to?”
By painting this picture of health together, we ensure our work is aligned with your goals from day one.
At Wellspring Counseling, we aim for healing from the get-go. While complex problems are rarely solved in a single hour, we want you to leave your first session feeling understood, supported, and encouraged. Often, the simple act of slowing down and having a professional ask the right questions helps you make sense of your feelings in a brand-new way.
During this meeting, your counselor will use their clinical expertise to evaluate whether outpatient care is the safest and most effective for you, or to help you take direct action steps if you are in a serious crisis.
Finding Your Rhythm: Why Bi-Weekly Sessions Work
Once the journey begins, most clients at Wellspring settle into a “standard rhythm” of meeting once every two weeks. This frequency is a strategic balance designed for two purposes:
- Momentum: Meeting every other week is frequent enough to maintain the progress you’ve made, build a trusting therapeutic relationship, and keep your growth top-of-mind.
- Integration: Two weeks provides the necessary space to live your “real life.” It gives you the opportunity to test new skills, face challenges, and practice the insights gained in the therapy room in real-world scenarios.
This rhythm is always tailored. If you are in high distress, we may meet weekly for a time. Conversely, as you feel better and see your life changing, you may transition to monthly sessions for continued growth, maintenance, and occasional “check-ins.”
The Timeline: Navigating the Map of Your Journey
While the “rhythm” defines your pace, the “duration” is the total map of the journey. Counseling is not a lifetime sentence; it is a focused period of work. Based on evidence-based research and models like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), we generally see the following ranges:
- Individual Anxiety & Depression: Typically 8–16 sessions.
- Couples Counseling: Typically 8–20 sessions. (Please note that if there have been betrayals, traumas, or deep relationship injuries, this process may require more time to rebuild safety.)
- Complex Trauma: Often requires a longer duration to establish a foundation of security and deep healing.
- Brief Interventions: For specific hurdles, we may use solution-focused methods or positive psychology to help you shift your perspective in just a few visits.
The 5–6 Session Milestone: A Purposeful “Zoom Out”
We believe in accountability and collaboration. Regardless of the concern, we recommend a deliberate “zoom out” point after five or six sessions. At this milestone, we evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment: Are we meeting your goals? Do we need to tweak our approach? Do you need more action or more exploration? This ensures the process remains transparent and effective.
Client Autonomy: You Are the Expert on Your Life
A vital pillar of the Wellspring approach is the belief that you remain the expert on your own life. While your counselor brings clinical wisdom, specialized training, and an outside perspective to see things you might miss, you define the vision.
Your potential, your hopes, and your definitions of health are what determine our goals. You have a tremendous say in how this process goes, and you should always feel the freedom to speak openly with your counselor about the direction of your care.
