How do I know which counselor is right for me?

Answered by Jonathan Kittel, LPC/S, LMFT/S & Martha Temple, Counseling Intern & Intake Coordinator · 2:18

The short answer

You do not have to work that out before you call. Our Intake Coordinator asks what brings you in, who the counseling is for, and when you can come, then recommends the counselor whose experience and schedule fit. A counselor who was right for a friend may not be the right one for you, and we can help with that too.

Jonathan: How do I know which counselor is right for me? So, when you're helping people who are reaching out for counseling, how do you help people figure that out, discern who the best fit is if they don't know?

Martha: Yeah. So, I usually ask a couple of questions. One, if they were referred for a specific type of counseling or a specific counselor. What their primary reason for counseling is. So if someone just says marriage, or counseling for my child, I'll just ask some additional questions, a little bit more, just to help me understand what they need. And then once I know what they're coming for, I'll know which of our counselors work with those types of situations, with that age group, because our counselors, we have a varied staff, which is great, but they all do something a little bit differently. And then I'll also ask about scheduling, because we want to make sure that when our counselors are here, they can come and that works for them.

Jonathan: That's the piece I often forget about, but it's often the practical, logistical.

Martha: Yeah. Because if our counselor has Tuesdays available and they're out of town every Tuesday, it's not going to work.

Jonathan: You know, sometimes I tell people when I'm talking: you don't have to know which counselor is the best for you. We can help in that process. Just kind of knowing what are your pain points, what are you hoping to see?

Martha: Yeah. And a lot of times, which we love, word of mouth, but a lot of times people will hear about us because they know someone who came here for counseling, or their child came here, but their needs are a little bit different than who told them to come here. And so I can sort of know that and know who might be a really good fit. I know what our counselors' client loads look like, and sometimes there are trends and groups of people they work with more frequently, and I can recommend them based on that.

Jonathan: That's great.
